History of the Engel Inn and the host family Decker

The Engel Hotel and Restaurant has been in the Decker line of innkeepers for several generations.

On the front side, a beam contains the engraved inscription: «Simon Ernst – Moica Decker 1764 „ (should be Monika Decker). The house in Engelweg, which is located directly behind the “Engel”, also has an engraved beam inscription: “Jacob Ernst – Cathahina Schmiderich 1764”. This Jacob Ernst is probably a brother of Simon Ernst. Monika Decker married the widower and innkeeper Simon Ernst (1726 – 1783, son of Jacob Ernst who died in 1743) on April 29, 1760. At that time Simon Ernst managed the inn “Linde”, today’s “Engel”. According to the bar inscription quoted above, Monika Decker, married Ernst, was thus the first innkeeper of today’s Decker line of innkeepers.

Until about 1880 the “Linde” was managed by descendants of Simon Ernst. First until about 1790 by his Sohn Philipp Jakob Ernst (1755 – 1829), then by his son Alt-Lindenwirt and master cooper Josef Ernst (1798 – 1861) and finally from 1855 by his son Jung-Lindenwirt Josef-Franz Ernst (1828 – 1863). His daughter Emma Ernst married master carpenter Augustin Decker (1837 – 1901) on April 29, 1873.

Probably around this time or shortly thereafter, the inn “Linde” received the current inn name “Engel”. Augustin Decker, after the death of his wife of 24 years in 1879, acquired the inn in 1880 by way of inheritance. With this acquisition, Augustin Decker re-established or continued the Decker line of innkeepers that still exists today. By succession, his son, master painter and innkeeper Berthold Decker (1881 – 1937), married to Karolina née Huber, cook, became the owner of the “Engel” in 1901.

In 1957 their son cook and innkeeper Herbert Augustin Decker (1922 – 1974) married to Cäcilie, née Schmelzle, took over the “Engel”. With the passing away of Herbert Augustin Decker (1972) the “Engel” was in community of his heirs and was finally continued in 1982 by his son and today’s owner Herbert Michael Decker. Daughter Christine Mamber, native-born Decker is with husband and chef Christian Mamber since 2005 with the continuation of the inn “Hotel and Restaurant Engel”.
